The hereafter of Humankind

Many people colse to the advanced world speak today about "envisioning a real, sustainable, post-industrial future." Like them, I too prefer conditions of greater reciprocity among peoples and with the earth. A 'post-industrial' economic platform admittedly sounds tempting, but it seems somewhat difficult to dream given the history of human consciousness and how the transformation of consciousness has significantly impacted our globe - socially, politically, economically and ecologically.

Certainly, it is not impossible to visualize a world with galvanic cars, windfarms, and less-destructive, more earth-friendly agricultural methods. It may even be possible to dream of a world with little, if any, nuclear threats and fewer wars. However, even these alterations in behavior will need a deeper transformation of human self-understanding and of our place in the world.

Western Hard Drive

As a species, we have made a series of maybe unalterable choices starting practically 10,000 years ago with the birth of civilization, the effects of which have positioned us as we now find ourselves in the world; and these choices have molded our expectations and our requirements about what life should be like - in short, the purpose or ends towards which we feel human life and culture should be directed.

The hereafter of Humankind

The overarching vision, with its fundamental assumptions and expectations, has peaked and crystalized itself in the now-taken-for-granted idea of 'American exceptionalism', our self-proclaimed political, economic, and moral superiority, and the apparent hegemony of our cultural values. It is these expectations and values that have been spread across the globe like wildfire, as we have pursued a policy of global dominance and cultural transformation or occupation. Some groups, nation-states and countries find these values desireable, others abhorrent. Some try to mold themselves to the foresight enunciated by such expectations, while others arm themselves to the teeth to fight-off its insidious occupiers.

Having planted our flag at the forefront of western civilization and declared our own 'manifest destiny,' we Americans continue to believe that we have set the right example for mankind to follow, and that we are justified foremost the rest of the human race to fulfill its permissible role in our civilization. We set ourselves up long ago as protectors of moral virtue, cultural innovation, political Power, economic progress, and human rights. And much of the western world has followed our lead in this myopic belief, unchallenged until very recently.

Do not misunderstand me, we have admittedly achieved a great deal, especially in terms of medical treatment, communication and other advanced technologies. But, can our unflinching drive for innovation and progress, for perfect dominion over the uncertainties of our natural environment and animal natures - a drive that began ages ago with specialization, spurred on by venture capital and private risk taking, motivated by the acquisition of private property and wealth - can this rocketship of science and technology, fueled by the resources of capitalistic expansion, be brought to a stop; can it be slowed down, can we alter or reverse its trajectory?

I believe the sass to this request is not plainly an economic nor even a political one; and this is because the request that it begs is deeply philosophical. Can human consciousness and human self-understanding be changed significantly adequate to alter the social, political and economic trajectory of modern society? That is the more fundamental question. But, if we seek an affirmative sass to this question; then added questions must be asked of modern man, if the future is to be transformed in the manner we hope.

Can we reintegrate the nuclear and the extended family within the framework of a worldview that is overtly driven by radical individualism? Can we rebuild group networks based upon consanguinity, personal relations and mutual respect, rather than upon the authoritarian military of an anonymous political Power elite, whether elected or otherwise?

Can we learn to live without the hope of highspeed worldwide tour on demand, and instead be more content to live a peaceful life in presence to where we were born, with those we know and love close to us?

Can we restructure our spatial expectations about towns, villages and communities so that we do not need private communication vehicles (cars) just to live general everyday lives? Can we ever become comfortable again with the idea of walking places, or using trustworthy group communication when necessary?

Can we adjust our expectations about money, wealth and comfort, and be content to live more simply, more modestly on the earth? Can we adjust how we understand 'work', and learn to accept less productivity, maybe zero economic growth, and begin to enjoy life more on a daily and hourly basis? And, can those countries that are finally starting to taste the apple of American capitalism that has been shoved down their throats be convinced that it was all a mistake, that tasting this will admittedly be the root of their destruction?

Can we learn to sing and dance, and to feel our bodies again, without shame or embarrassment? Can we stop 'tweeting' for virtual friends, while demanding ever new gadgets and technologies of ourselves and our technical masters, and just be content with fewer 'prosthetic' parts, and try not to be superheroes?

Can we be honest with ourselves and with one another, that we have in fact been arrogant and devisive, and not just American's with their 'exceptionalism', but all who share in the special traditions of our civilizations, past and present, that have culminated in this unique story that we call human history?

Can we step back adequate to reclaim a more natural place within the animal kingdom, and recover from our early civilized need to dominate nature, and the expansive hangover that admittedly came in to its own with Francis Bacon and the scientific method, and our transition into the modern era of infinite progress?

These are some of the hard questions that must be asked. The answers are still uncertain, as we seek to simplify our own lives and our households, to good reflect the realities we find immanent and already starting to imping upon us.

Western Digital 500 Gigabyte 'Passport' External Hard - Drive impart

I bought my Western Digital 500 gigabyte Passport in July of 2009 and I can really say it was one of the best investments I have ever made. Since I run an online company I do a lot of work from my home computer. However, I also need to work on a few distinct computers from time to time, so having a device that I can unplug and then plug right into other Usb port is ideal.

As of now, I do all of my work on my external hard-drive. This means that I save all of my work directly onto my Passport instead of first salvage it onto my laptop's hard drive. I do, however, use my laptop for backing up work (this is the opposite of how most citizen work, but I find it to be far more effective when switching computers a lot).

Western Hard Drive

Having a hard-drive with a large amount of disk space was crucial for me, as I have a lot of music (at least 80 gigabytes) so I needed somewhere that I could store it. Not only that, but I also needed to know that all of the music and files that I put on my Passport would be protected properly, and I wouldn't one day wake up to the horrifying fact that they'd all been deleted or come to be corrupted. This is an feel that I have already had once before, and is one that I hope to never have again for as long as I live. Thankfully, the Passport is an very trustworthy device, and one that I'd suggest to everyone.

Driving Tips: Towing an Off Road Camper Trailer

If you've just purchased a new off road camper trailer, or if you're planning to hire a 4Wd camper trailer and you have no towing experience, this article gives you a few helpful pointers. It's important to drive safely for a hassle-free camping experience.

Take Off Slowly

Western Hard Drive

When you're towing a 4Wd camper trailer, always take off slowly. Allow your towing-vehicle to enlarge gradually through the gears. The first and second gears will give you the most Power when pulling your trailer. Once the vehicle and trailer have gained momentum, then you're free to Move into the higher gears.

Driving Tips: Towing an Off Road Camper Trailer

Keep Your Distance

Towing an off-road camper trailer adds requisite extra weight to your vehicle. Once moving, this extra weight contributes to an increased momentum. Increased momentum means:

The vehicle will take longer (requiring more distance) to stop Sharp turns are magnified and more difficult to correct

To avoid an accident, you should keep extra distance in the middle of yourself and other vehicles in front of you. This also allows other vehicles to overtake you easily.

Avoid Overtaking

If you're inexperienced in towing a vehicle, you should avoid overtaking altogether. If you must overtake another vehicle, be aware of your extended length. It's very important that you double-check (using rear view and side mirrors) that the whole distance of your vehicle plus camper trailer has passed the other vehicle. Remember, too, that your vehicle's acceleration Power is greatly decreased with the increasing of a trailer, so you will need significantly extra time and distance to successfully overtake any vehicle.

If another driver attempts to overtake you, you might be tempted to slow down and let them pass. If so, you must avoid applying your brakes too heavily. If you brake too hard, you could cause the camper trailer to sway, resulting in loss of operate of the trailer. Instead, allege your speed and allow the other vehicle to accelerate to overtake you. Keeping to the left and driving gradually is courteous, production it easy for other drivers to overtake you.

Use Low Gear for Slopes

Driving Uphill

If you find yourself losing speed whilst climbing a hill or slope, switch to low gear. Switching to low gear, such as first or second, gives you the Power you need to drag the weighted vehicle up the slope.

Driving Downhill

It is always best to travel very gradually when you must drive downhill towing a camper trailer. Avoid accelerating and avoid high gears. Instead, use a low gear to operate your progress. Driving in low gear also reduces the need to apply breaks suddenly, which could cause you to lose operate of your trailer.

Drive Safely

If you result these basic tips, you should enjoy a safe driving sense with your camper trailer. Remember to result general road protection advice, such as avoiding alcohol eight hours before driving and never driving when tired. It's also a good idea to alternate drivers if possible. If you're traveling alone and can't take turns driving with another person, be sure to take frequent rest breaks. Drive safely and no doubt you'll be rewarded with a happy camper trailer holiday.

Wdbaau0010Hbk Western Digital External Hard Drive describe

Are you seeing for a Western Digital Wdbaau0010Hbk, a 1-terabyte external hard drive? If you are not sure about its performance, please read this review. I will show you about pros and cons of the Wdbaau0010Hbk. Furthermore, I will tell you about how to get it for the bottom price.

Let me tell you about my background a sLight bit. I take photographs as my serious hobby so I have a lot of photos, photography software, e-books and documentaries which are about 250 Gb. This is a presuppose why I need a new external hard drive to keep my photography stuff. I spent a lot of time doing research about a good external hard drive and I finally got the Wdbaau0010Hbk Western Digital which has a capacity of 1 terabyte. I have been using it for few months and I would like to summarize about pros and cons of it.

Western Hard Drive

Pros of Western Digital Wdbaau0010Hbk

Wdbaau0010Hbk Western Digital External Hard Drive describe

Its size is quite small than I initially expect hence it doesn't use much space to place on my desk. It is very quite while it is running. I have been using it for awhile and there is no noisy sound from it at all. A indicator Light is settled at the rear of the unit. This is a very good design because the light can annoy you while working, especially at night time. Transferring speed is very good. When I Moved my files from my desktop hard disc, total of 250 Gb, I took about 3 hours and 15 minutes with average transferring speed of 25 Mb per second which is pretty decent for a Usb 2.0 port. It has a nice design case which is made of durable plastic. It is easy to use. For a window-based computer, you can just naturally plug and play. However, if you use a Mac computer, you need to format it one time prior to using. While it is running for a long time, it doesn't get hot at all. This is very perfect because if there is a lot of heat, electronics inside the hard disc will be gradually destroyed. Its price is affordable. When I assess in the middle of hard drive capacities and cost from any hard disc models, I can say that this model is the best value.

Cons of Western Digital Wdbaau0010Hbk

The holder does not look very strong. The design should do a slight bit good on the packaging.

How can you find cheap Western Digital Wdbaau0010Hbk?

You can buy it from electronic shopping malls or online stores. Based on my experience, I found that online shop always offer good prices. I would suggest you to buy from the internet.

Driveways and the scenery - Erosion Issues

Gravel driveways are best Powerful to comparatively level areas. Rainstorms will probably cause serious erosion on steep inclines. Another disadvantage appears in areas where snow must be shoveled in the winter. It is roughly impossible to shovel snow without picking up some gravel and throwing it onto the lawn; if not reMoved early the following spring, the gravel is likely to injure your lawn mower.

A point in favor of gravel driveways, however, is the pleasant sound caused by a car traveling over it. It is also one of the cheapest drives you can construct. While not easy to walk on when new, it will come to be packed and hard after indispensable use.

Western Hard Drive

Where funds are lacking and a blacktop or concrete drive cannot be put in at the start, a gravel driveway is not wasted as it can furnish a exquisite foundation for a more permanent covering later on. Indeed, this is often the wisest procedure to follow, because during grading operations there are likely to be areas of indispensable fill in the normal driveway area. By putting heavy gravel on the lowest and finer gravel on top and using this for a couple of years, you give the soil ample opening to attain its final level. After that apply a black top and there will be no further settling.

Driveways and the scenery - Erosion Issues

This is Another example of the wisdom of the old admonition that "haste makes waste," which adage holds good many times in gardening.

Driveway Width

Just like in a desert scenery designs the width of a driveway depends, of course, on how it is to be used. In the case of a two-car stable attached to the end of the house, consider the possibility of using the stable stall nearer to the house for the car that is used the least. At the same time, it would be advisable to make the driveway fan-shaped at the stable entrance, so as to allow room for plants at the all-important projection of the house. There they not only look well, but also help to screen the gaping stable doors.

Metal Edge for Drive

Keeping the grass neatly trimmed along the driveway is an oppressive and ordinarily disliked task. One explication (at dinky further cost) consists of edging the driveway with a metal flashing strip designed especially for this purpose. This will save a great deal of time and make the communal area much neater.

Super Consciousness - Sex, Lies and Video Tapes - studying Life the Hard Way

Like the time my mate and I got pulled over by the police for racing in our hotted up sports cars. He got a huge fine and I went to court and proved the policeman could not have seen clearly with the sun in his eyes. I represented myself, and cross examined the policeman. I was 20 years old and had been told my licence was lost. I had fight, and it was a great asset.

My wife and I lived hand to mouth. I started a car cleaning firm to pay our way straight through university. I'd gather cars from car dealers, drive them home, polish them until they looked new inside and out, and return them. I delivered pamphlets to letter boxes, contracted to clean building sites and sold a patent for air pollution control - never once during the whole four years of University - taking a job that wasn't fun and inviting to do. (even pamphlet delivery is hilarious practice if you do it right)

Western Hard Drive

This free spirit had no moral compass. What was right? What was wrong? It was in an era of experimentation - flower Power - and we lived the free life unburdened by the claustrophobia of "the system." Ecology became my passion in which I was 100% sure the world would never survive the bureaucracy and consumptive greed of the Western mind. I was wrong - it did survive - ugly as it may seem to some.

Super Consciousness - Sex, Lies and Video Tapes - studying Life the Hard Way

But now I needed a job. We bought a house, Moved cities, started integrating in society, dumping the beard, tee shirts and smiles for corporate compliance. With my moral compass pointing toward experimentation and discovery I became a compliant employee, I wanted a career, money and safety for our soon to arrive baby.

You can take the man out of nature, but you can't take the true nature out of a man and so, a dichotomy emerged. The life people, together with my wife wanted to hear me speak about, and the real one, my spirit of adventure.

At first, the disjunction was minor. I'd come home from work an hour late and lie that I'd been busy when in truth, I'd been down the pub with the boys from work doing what men at work seem to need to do in a weird bonding ritual sucking up to the boss, listening to bad jokes and telling good ones where possible.

The Buddha said something like "tell them what they want to hear until they're ready to hear what you want to tell them" - Jesus said something like "don't throw pearls before swine" and there's a whole swag of other wisdoms that basically advocate - lying is great than truth.

Stand in front of an audience and speak your truth. It becomes a cold dark place. Stand in front of the same audience and tell them the truth they want to be the truth, and the nods come rushing, the sun shines and habitancy want you back. "teach them the illusion until they are ready for the truth" is a paraphrased quote from an ancient wisdom.

And so, the gap in the middle of my truth and the truth I needed to tell habitancy in order to vocalize their acceptance, pay cheque, corporate review, and love became ever more elastic. For thirteen breathtaking years I juggled this ever widening rift, winning the approval of a family, the safety of client speculation and the love and affection of a wife.

The only glitch in this rather simple model of life, which, by the way, every human lives no matter how pious they fake their religious values to be, (in fact the more basic a person declares their morality - the greater their lie) - is that, you can't lie to people.

When habitancy want to be lied to, when they want to hear false truth, they block their receptors, blind their own eyes, plug their ears and turn the other cheek. But they still know you're lying even if they don't want to know. The human intuition is natural, organic, self-operating and it's the best lie detector on earth. The only way to dampen the signal is to fill the void that's required to listen to it, with Noise.

If there's no ambient Noise in our head, we are all psychic, incredibly intuitive and, basically impervious to lies. But with sufficient Noise, such natural talents are sabotaged. Noise like busy-ness, distractions, chatter, obsessions with Kids, tension, friends, parties, - in short - the more pre-occupied we are with the things that we call our priorities, the more likely it is that our intuitions and inspirations will pass us unnoticed. And for 99.9999% of the world's western population, that's no accident.

Sitting alone with Aboriginal habitancy in the outback of Australia taught me the value of emptiness. Playing in the sand, using my imagination was absolutely the first baby steps in meditation. Communicating with my out of body mother is the space that's silent sufficient to hear below the noise that fills the world. And dealing with violent alcoholic aggression created a deep relationship to the essence of me that can never be hurt. The skills that monks and shaman I have met spend a lifetime searching for, we Drilled into me by nature.... My bad luck was absolutely my blessing.

One day I read the quote "We are not human beings finding to have a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings finding to have a human experience." and that quote absolutely flipped things for me. My inner belief was supreme, my outer was fake.... I now understood why.

Noise fills the air - it triggers our mind, makes our blood rush, gives us appetites and most importantly, lets us hear what we want to hear until we are ready to listen.

Noise like depressions, stress, obsessions, children, worry, anxiety, hurt, pain, emotional uppers and downers. Noise helped in volume by alcohol, food, drugs, greed, sex and some form of mind numbing meditation.

When habitancy come to me for help, they have the momentum of a freight train. The noise all around them is violent, attached and fragile. They want it to stop, they want the quality of life that comes from calm and noiselessness but they do not want to hear the voices behind that noise, that's why it's there, to protect them from the truth they least want to know.

I fell out of love with my wife. I hated my boss. I felt overwhelmed in my sporting ambitions. I didn't feel good around certain habitancy who, in the social eye, were heroes. I felt awkward, and to deal with it, I turned up the volume.

There are four questions we need to rejoinder in order to quieten the mind:
Who am I?
Why am I here?
Where am I going?
Where did I come from?

The more noise we make, the more busy and achievement focussed we come to be the simpler those questions get answered. Why? Because there's a short term rejoinder which is easiest when we're busy and a long term rejoinder which is hard unless we're silent.

Take the first one..... Who am I? Well I'm busy.... And I'm Chris, so shut up and get on with it will you.

So, is Chris your body? If you have a heart transplant are you still Chris? Yes, now get back to it.

So, is what you own, know and feel Chris? It's a part of it, now piss off.

Then if I change what you own, know and feel I change you? No you don't now go away, I have things to do...

So, if you aren't what you own, know or feel, why are those things prominent to you? Cripes, will you get off my back....

Well?... Look I don't want to talk to you any-more....

Well? Ok, so I must be some worthless piece of dust hidden under this shroud of things that I own, know and feel.

Worthless? Well what damn value do I have if I don't have whatever to value?

You can Love? Uh oh here comes the new age....

You can be loved? Yeah, right, sitting on a bench, drinking meth from the bottle, with no home.... absolutely great life... But oh you're loved.... Forget it.

So, love means failure? No, but I don't want to be a monk.... Love and a robe is not sufficient to pay the mortgage...

Are there two you's - an inside and an covering you? Yes.

And which do you think is stronger? Sorry, the phone is ringing and I need to pick up the Kids from school. Can we get back to this someone else time, like in about 2,000,000 years?

Some Human Causes of Hard Drive Crashes

It is in very rare occasions that you will find that mechanical problems are the ones that cause hard drive crashes. It is mostly human beings who cause hard drive failure. Yes, human beings are not exquisite beings, and yes, they are bound to make mistakes. But there can always be room for improvement.

Here are some ways man causes hard drive crashes:

Western Hard Drive

Human beings can mishandle the hard drives. For example, if you are carrying a laptop in the office and you want to go and show person something, you resolve to carry it with one hand instead of both. The risk of it falling and crashing is high because it is much safer to carry it with both hands rather than one hand.

Some Human Causes of Hard Drive Crashes

Another way human beings can cause hard drive crashes is through evil motives. By this I mean that there are some human beings whose intentions are ill. They could be jealous or revengeful and would not like to see others succeed.

One of the ways that humans can have evil motives is by introducing viruses to someone's computer. We all know the effects of viruses on hard drives. Viruses are programs that are designed to disrupt the normal working of the hard drive. They cause both corruption and deletion of files. Human beings can both accidentally or deliberately infect ones computer with a virus and thus, cause the hard drive to crash.

Another way in which humans can cause destruction is through arson. It is very inherent that person can resolve to set ablaze your society because of a deal gone sour or because of jealousy. All your property will get burnt together with computer hard drives.

Man is capable of doing anyone he wants. As long as he puts his mind into it, he is capable of anything. As much as you try to keep your hard drive safe, always be ready in case the worst happens.

On the left side is a singular Usb port, while round the back is an Ethernet port and two jack sockets that join the existing Hdmi, visual digital Audio, second Usb port, and Power socket. The two jack plugs are 'Av Out' and 'Y Pb Pr' use ownership cables to add stereo Audio and composite video and component video, respectively.

The menu area is well idea out. You can view media by three distinct ways. You can browse your media whether as a list, as thumbnails or as a list with a preview on the right.

When you are viewing the discrete media, you can zoom into and pan nearby images. Video files can be fast-forwarded, rewound and skipped straight through by chapter. These are very nice features.

The Wd Tv Live Plus makes is a great media streaming that comes in a very small footprint and makes playing your multimedia files on your Tv easier than ever before.

Apple Tv
The Apple Tv is an very well idea out 720p movie player. It's main purpose is to stream video from the likes of Netflix, iTunes movie rental and Watch the Mlb.Tv and Nba internet channels as well as well as podcast shows from iTunes, YouTube, Flickr as well as internet Radio.

Connections are very simple. The Apple Tv unit plugs into a Hdtv via a Hdmi cable. Apple for some reckon chose not to contain the Hdmi cable and it has to be purchased in addition to the unit. If you want to plug the Apple Tv into a stereo there is an elective plug for an visual cable. Be aware that the Apple Tv cannot be used with older television sets that just have an Rgb connection since it only accepts an Hdmi cable.

The menu screen is very straightforward and intuitive to navigate within. I like the fact that it has iTunes movie rental. Itunes movie rental is just like going down to your video store and renting a movie. You pay a fee for each movie you Watch. I prefer this to the old fashioned way of going down to the video rental store. When in the iTunes section, you can select a movie by looking box art as well as a detailed description. There is even a preview button to see a preview of the movie before renting it from iTunes.

The Netflix section lets you watch movies from their vast archive of online movies for a small monthly fee. This is probably the area you will use most. And if you like to watch lots of movies, this area is a money saver. For the movie buff you will be in heaven with the choices of films that are available. There are also lots of foreign movies as well as lots of documentaries which are fun to watch too.

You won't go wrong with whether of these set top box units. If your main goal is to stream your own movies, pictures and music from your own hard drives then the Wd Tv Live Plus is the way to go. If you like to rent movies and don't have a vast range of your own to select from then the Apple Tv will probably be the option for you. Anyone you decide, it will save you because you will be able to do away with a few of the selected movie channels offered from your cable company. This will pay for itself fast.

Borat - Orientalist Satire for Make Glorious deliberate upon Western Intelligentsiya

"Dzienkuje" Sacha Baron Cohen!

We were waiting for Godot, but you sensed what we indubitably needed and instead sent us Borat! And Borat is if nothing else a Moveable feast and a gift that keeps on giving. You managed simultaneously to offend Kazakhs, frighten Jewish anti-defamation groups, outrage the orientalism monitors, tee off hypocritically thin-skinned Americans, provoke laughter across the Beavis and Butthead, Southpark, and Archie Bunker generations, and last--but indubitably not least--provide glorious opening for Western intellectuals for criticize and deliberate upon merit, meaning, and interpretation of celluloid masterpiece. Finally, thanks to you, we can now confirm that rumors of Yakov Smirnov's death were greatly exaggerated. It turns out he is fine and doing well, having found gainful employment in great American city called Branson, Missouri ("Hours great...auditorium, career, and pockets less filling...but what a country!"...ok, bad example)! Slamma dunk, emission accomplished, and hiyya-fiyva, to you Sacha!

Western Hard Drive

Talk about a movie that led to theatergoers being bombarded--even before they checked cinema times--with conflicting cues and instructions from cultural elites, trendsetters, and peers:

Borat - Orientalist Satire for Make Glorious deliberate upon Western Intelligentsiya

1) Go the movie. Laugh, have fun!

2) If you go to the movie, don't laugh!

3) Go the movie, laugh, but later feign outrage!

4) Don't go the movie--in part because you might laugh!

5) If you do go, there's something wrong with you.

6) If you don't go, there's something wrong with you.

Borat!: Cultural Learnings of America for Make benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan can't help but leave the impression that we may have come to be an over-scripted, over-programmed culture.

This article attempts to address some of the controversies and larger ramifications resulting from Borat the character and Borat! the movie (hereafter Borat!). It does so by tapping some of the wide-ranging film criticism, op-eds, and Internet postings that the film has spawned. An admission and disclaimer of sorts about the film seems in order before I begin: I went...I laughed...I wept ...(but because I was laughing, not because I went).

Is for make fun of Kazakh peoples!...Not!!!

Let us begin with a ask that has consumed so many keystrokes in modern months. In part we can do so because Sacha Baron Cohen's intent (i.e. Production/Supply side) is so much more straightforward than is the ask of how the movie is or has been interpreted and used by audiences (i.e. Consumption/demand side).

Shortly after the American release of Borat! an interview with Sacha Baron Cohen appeared in the 14 November 2006 edition of Rolling Stone. Clearly, a lot of population don't know about the interview, haven't read it, or don't wish to, because on the Internet the deliberate upon about who Baron Cohen satirizes in the film rages on. While there can be, are, and will be many interpretations of who gets hurt as a supervene of Borat! (more on this below), Baron Cohen's comments to the interviewer Neil Strauss indubitably eliminate much of the investment about what Baron Cohen intends the film to do. That Baron Cohen may have realized too late that there was real value and Power in holding mum about his intentions with Borat is inherent when you consider that, according to Strauss, Baron Cohen was bothered enough by the encounter that he called Strauss back a week after the interview to discuss it.

Here is what Baron Cohen said that should--although probably won't--once and for all dampen investment about his motivations in production Borat!. Baron Cohen was reacting to news that the Kazakh government was reasoning of suing him and placing a full-page ad promoting the country in The New York Times (they ultimately did the latter):

I was surprised, because I all the time had faith in the audience that they would realize that this was a fictitious country and the mere purpose of it was to allow population to bring out their own prejudices. And the speculate we chose Kazakhstan was because it was a country that no one had heard anyone about, so we could essentially play on stereotypes they might have about this ex-Soviet backwater. The joke is not on Kazakhstan. I think the joke is on population who can believe that the Kazakhstan that I describe can exist--who believe that there's a country where homosexuals wear blue hats and the women live in cages and they drink fermented horse urine and the age of consent has been raised to nine years old.

Thus can end much of the deliberate upon about Cohen's intentions. It's about the population Borat interviews--in the film, Americans--not about Kazakhstan and Kazakhs. The film is designed to be about Americans.

Certainly, this was what Ryan Gilbey of London's leftist weekly, New Statesman, took away from the film. An article introduced as "Sacha Baron Cohen's exposure of crass Americana" and "The Kazakh ace reporter uncovers uncomfortable truths about the Us" summarized the film as follows:

The violence that Borat encounters on the New York subway after trying to greet male strangers with kisses is frighteningly real....There's an aging cowpoke who requires only the mildest of prompts to endorse the murder of gays and Muslims. Others indict themselves as much by what they don't say as what they do. A redneck rodeo crowd shows no compunction about cheering Borat's gung-ho speech about Iraq, clearly not realizing that what he indubitably said was: "We hold your war of terror!" And it's shocking to inspect the tacit acceptance with which Borat's ghoulish requests are greeted. Trying to find the ideal car for mowing down gypsies, or seeking the best gun for killing Jews, he encounters only yielding among America's salespeople. The customer, it seems, is all the time right, even when he's far right.

An April 2003 article by Lucy Kelaart in the British daily The Guardian, suggests that some Kazakhs--at least those with some exposure to the West--understood this about Borat even back then (based on his British television show visits to the Us). Most of Kelaart's interview subjects on the streets of Almaty were unamused, rather than indubitably offended, and concept Borat was just plain stupid:

Ainura, 25, recently spent a year living in the Us. Does she think Borat is giving Kazakhstan a bad name. "Borat's not production fun of Kazakhs, he's production fun of Americans," she says. "They are gullible. Not one of them said, 'No way - that can't be true.' The show describes a Us stereotype, not a Kazakh one. It lays bare the American attitude towards foreigners: strong accents, loud voices, stupidity, male chauvinism."

Of course, as I stated earlier and we shall see, were Baron Cohen's intentions the be-all and end-all of the annotation this article would be far shorter than it is. Particularly in the age of post-modern criticism, the audience and any real or inherent sub-audiences take center-stage.

The "Full" Sacha Baron Cohen: Beyond Borat

Lest Americans who see Borat! think in ethnocentric terms that we are Baron Cohen's necessary target in his work, it is instructive to look at the "Full" Sacha Baron Cohen, or at most recent a broader array of the characters he has played on television and in film.

In Baron Cohen's other signature role in Hollywood films in 2006, he played Will Ferrell's foil and antagonist in the movie Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Baron Cohen's character, Jean Girard, is a French "Formula Un" driver who takes the Nascar circuit by storm. He is a walking embodiment some might say of the "freedom fries," "red(neck) state" American stereotype of the French--a snobbish, effete, espresso-sipping, opera-listening, L'Etranger-reading (adding insult to injury all while he drives!), Perrier-sponsored homosexual (his longtime partner played by Conan O'Brien's one-time latenight sidekick Andy Richter).

It is hard to see this as a role in which Baron Cohen is somehow exploiting the American audience, other than that by playing a stereotype intended to be maximally obnoxious he is in a sense condescending that audience and its intelligence. Rather, his role as Jean Girard seems quintessentially English (a la Benny Hill), and in that sense sheds Light back on Borat, as we learn from his Rolling Stone interview that Baron Cohen grew up idolizing Peters Sellers and loved Sellers' infamous French stereotype, Inspector Jacques Clouseau:

Baron Cohen's future was set when he was roughly eight years old by two necessary events. The first was finding one of Peter Sellers' Pink Panther movies at a friend's ninth birthday party--setting off a lifelong admiration of the British comic actor's work. The other was when his older brothers snuck him into a theater to see Monty Python's Life of Brian.

Certainly, Baron Cohen's most paramount character--and the one whose success probably was responsible for Borat getting a opening over the long-run--is the faux "gangsta" rapper Ali G.. Indeed, it is instructive to note that in Ali G.'s first full-length highLight film in 2001, Ali G. Indahouse, instead of an epic quest for Pamela Anderson, Ali G. Is in race of the supermodel Naomi Campbell. Much of the annotation of "Ali G." sounds in fact remarkably familiar when we see allegations about Baron Cohen's insensitivity to Kazakhs. Within the Uk, Ali G. Precipitated comments like the following from Felix Dexter, a comedian on a British television series. Substitute "Kazakhs" for "black road culture" and one could get a characterization similar to what we see in the wake of Borat!: "But a lot of the humor is laughing at black road culture and it is being paramount because it allows the liberal middle classes to laugh at that culture in a context where they can hold their sense of political correctness."

Tell It to the Kazakhs!...Nevertheless, Why Exactly Kazakhstan?

The forefather and prototype for Borat was the character of a Moldovan television reporter, named Alexi Krickler, who Cohen played in the mid-1990s on British television. according to Cohen that character was based on a doctor he met at a free beach getaway in Astrakhan, southern Russia: "...there was a guy there who was a doctor, and the moment I met him, I started laughing...He had some elements of Borat, but he had none of the racism or the misogyny or the anti-Semitism. He was Jewish, actually."

This is revealing inasmuch as that the personal characteristics are separated from the views he ascribes to his artistic creation, which some might complain is the essence of stereotyping.

It was as Alexi Krickler that Baron Cohen hit upon what Strauss terms "a tiny epiphany that would ultimately fuel Baron Cohen's career":

For example, when interviewing person about the rugby team British Lions, he'd go back and forth with the interviewee for ten minutes, seemingly unable to realize that they don't have actual lions playing rugby. "I was struck by the patience of some of these members of the upper class, who were so keen to appear polite--particularly on camera--that they would never walk away," Baron Cohen says.
Of course, there was a dissimilarity that may have petered out over the years...at least in Borat!: originally, Baron Cohen heavily concentrated on the indubitably Powerful, either celebrities or those with money and Power, but in Borat! he clearly started sliding toward "taking the piss out of" more mean citizens. maybe this is where he "crossed the line."

Greetings from "Post(card)-Commiestan"

The Borat of Borat! was still to have some incarnations from Alexi Krickler to the Borat Sagdiyev of today. After Alexi Krickler came an Albanian television reporter named Kristo. Only later did Baron Cohen's "Borat" come to be Kazakh: first as Borat Karabzhanov, then as Borat Dutbayev, and ultimately in 2003 as Borat Sagdiyev. This is maybe prominent for it suggests that although Sacha Baron Cohen and Kazakhstan have come to be inseparably intertwined, Borat's "Kazakhness" was roughly incidental. One is inevitably reminded here of mistaken intention sometimes favorably read into retrospective analyses: Bram Stoker's Dracula is today inextricably related with Romania, yet Dracula apparently started out in Stoker's imagination as "Count Wampyr" from Styria (Austria) and only later (like Borat) migrated eastward to Transylvania.

Still, Moldova, Albania, and Kazakhstan have a clear coarse theme--they are all part of the post-communist world of the previous Eastern Europe and previous Soviet Union. And it is worth recalling here Baron Cohen's own comments mentioned earlier: "And the speculate we chose Kazakhstan was because it was a country that no one had heard anyone about, so we could essentially play on stereotypes they might have about this ex-Soviet backwater." In other words, a generic post(card)-Commiestan of sorts.

Baron Cohen has not commented specifically on why Krickler had to leave Moldova and turn his name and why his television reporter is all the time from the post-communist world, but we can speculate. In this way not much has changed from Bram Stoker's time: the need to find a setting that is simultaneously exotic and yet familiar, that acts as a prop but not distraction from the underlying goal of the artform. One wonders to what extent Borat's migration from Moldova to Albania to Kazakhstan was dictated directly or indirectly by real world events--Albania indubitably losing some of the "unknown" character that is key to this plot device, because of heavier news coverage surrounding Kosovo in the late 1990s (witness perhaps, the film Wag the Dog). length of policy makes parody easier (witness the infamous Weird Al Yankovic song and video parody "Amish Paradise"--talk about a disenfranchised society who was unlikely to get upset!) But only up to a point: Go eastward young man!...but not too far east because then you come to be unrecognizable and your audience can't describe and the power of the satire is lost!

Molvania, Romanovia, and Kreplakistan...Oh My!

This still leaves a key ask unanswered: why has Baron Cohen sought to have his mock reporter come from real places...however fictionally-described? If, as Baron Cohen suggests, Borat is not from the real Kazakhstan, but from a fictional Kazakhstan so absurd that "the joke is on population who can believe that the Kazakhstan that I describe can exist," why choose a real country name to begin with? Mirroring the separation, reclamation of independence, and micro-state phenomena of the region itself while the post-communist era, modern years have seen an explosion of "really imagined communities" in the form of fictional countries placed in the post-communist space.

As John Tierney opined in a New York Times op-ed,"I wish Cohen had instead invented a country like Molvania," rather than have Borat come from Kazakhstan. Molvania is, of course, the familiar fictional land of the Jetlag voyage Guide series [Molvania: A Land Untouched by modern Dentistry], described as "somewhere north of Bulgaria and downwind of Chernobyl." (Despite the fictitious country's name, stipulated location, and characteristics, its three Australian authors mouth it was not modeled on Moldova or even Romania, but was inspired by travels in Portugal. ) Among many other things, Molvania is home to Europe's oldest nuclear reactor, and as one of its authors relates: "It's a very gorgeous country now that radiation levels have dropped to accepted standards."

Unsafe nuclear power plants, environmental degradation, and genetic mutation are also the punchline in Ben Stiller's 2004 comedy Dodgeball, in which we are introduced to Fran Stalinofskivichdavidovitchsky of Romanovia: "In her home country of Romanovia, dodgeball is the national sport and her nuclear power plant's team won the championship five years running, which makes her the deadliest woman on earth with a dodgeball."

Then there is Mike Myers' creation of Kreplakistan in the Austin Powers series: Kreplakistan is a previous Soviet republic apparently unable to protect its nuclear warheads and in a state of perpetual chaos (as mock Cnn clips of population running pell-mell transport to us). There is investment on the Wikipedia that Kreplakistan is "likely based on the real Karakalpak Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, now the Republic of Karakalpakstan." More convincing, however, is the idea that "kreplak" is inspired by "kreplach, an Eastern European Jewish dish consisting of meat-filled dumplings."

But is inventing a country the clarification to the problems of negative stereotyping and prejudice? If the Internet is any indication: apparently not. Molvania comes in for sharp annotation from those who view it as yet an additional one dissimilarity on the (neo-)orientalist theme. There are angry denunciations particularly of the photos the authors use in the book and on the Molvania website--for while they play the role of fictional, mockworthy Molvanians, they are indubitably real people. Nor have criticisms of Molvania been consigned merely to the orientalism monitors. In comments similar to those of Kazakh officials about Borat, in 2004 previous Uk clergyman for Europe Keith Vaz criticized the book because "it does reflect some of the prejudices which are taking root [in Europe]...The sad thing is, some population might indubitably believe that this country exists." Ironically, too, the option of a fictional "everycountry" can in fact be interpreted as even more insulting because it treats the population of an entire region or group as an essentially undifferentiated "them"--"I can't tell 'em apart, they all look alike..."

Borat, Class, and Urbanity

The parallel drawn by John Tierney in the middle of Borat! and Molvania is arguably a natural one, and thus one that many, especially on the Internet, have made. Particularly as stories began to come out about how Borat's mock "Kazakh" home settlement in the movie was filmed in a poor Roma (gypsy) settlement in Romania--where the villagers received as cost for their work the feast of "a pig" and while Sacha Baron Cohen reportedly spent the night in the swanky mountain recession of Sinaia --the issue of class entered the discussion about Borat!. It is difficult not to conclude that the issue of class can come to be funny in the film indubitably because it is portrayed by a "safe cultural environment." That is: poverty becomes broadly funny when it is portrayed by the comparatively unknown or culturally unprotected...be it Kazakhs or "trailer trash" in "red(neck) state" America.

The Polish author of the blog "Beatroot" captured this well in a post on the Molvania guidebook entitled: "Why is it that the only population 'liberals' think it's Ok to laugh at these days are the white working class and Central and Eastern Europeans?"

Europe's 'white trash'

...There is something a bit strange happening in the West. If this sort of book had been written about, say, African people, then, quite rightly, there would have been uproar and outrage. Words like 'racism' would have been used by lefty-liberal reviewers. But it seems that Political Correctness extends to all groups these days except poor whites from urban, rural or semi-rural areas in America and Europe.

Indeed, I would investment to speculate that had the villagers in Borat! been presented as Roma or "gypsies," rather than as fictional Kazakhs, there might have been greater outrage about this, indubitably because of the hierarchy of officially-recognized discrimination that prevails in cultural and political circles in the West. By being presented as the comparatively-unknown Kazakhs, however, it made it "easier" to laugh freely. And had the English tabloid press not taken an interest in the settlement of Glod (meaning "mud"!) and shown clips of the movie to the villagers, it is inherent that these fictional Kazakhs would have been every bit as disenfranchised as the Amish relative to Weird Al Yankovic: according to the journalists, "not a singular villager we spoke to had ever been able to afford a trip to the nearest cinema, 20 miles away"!

Sun-Baked Mud or When Things Get All Bollixed Up: The Uses of Borat

That ended cultural products can come to be intermediary inputs or be reprocessed for things their creators never could have dreamed of and might not even agree with is well-known. A few years back I remember finding a television article in a major Us metropolitan area where real estate agents were being investigated for using the shorthand "Archie Bunker" to describe clients with 'discriminating tastes,' reasoning that by using such language they were somehow remaining within the bounds of equal opening regulations. Similarly, Us military in Iraq have described their incorporation of the satirical jingoistic ballad "America, **ck yeah!" from Team America: World Police on their missions. So it has been with Borat. This is indubitably the complaint of Jewish anti-defamation groups: that it doesn't matter that Baron Cohen is Jewish and seeks to highlight anti-Semitic prejudice, if his audience laughs with, rather than at, Borat's anti-Semitism.

The London tabloid The Sun, familiar for its "misgivings" over immigration and some would argue pandering to racist and xenophobic attitudes, searched for its pitchfork to make hay out of Borat! in the context of the looming immigration deliberate upon related with Romania and Bulgaria's entry into the European Union on 1 January 2007. The paper delighted in quoting Gheorghiu Pascu, 46, as saying "Borat is a son-of-a-bitch who made us look like savages. This is Transylvania, home of Dracula. If he ever returns we will stick a stake in his backside and spit him. Then I would cut his b***s off." Two weeks later, under a headline blaring "We're leaving Romania" was a photo of villagers in horse-drawn carts with the caption "Horse and cart ... Romanians are heading our way for a better life; slowly." The article quotes a villager saying "people will simply get colse to the restrictions by working in the black market or being self-employed," and ends with an additional one pledging, "Borat should Watch out. He might bump into some of us in London soon."

America the Stereotype...Now arrival to a Theater Near You:
Getting America's Wrongs Right, its ownership Wrong, and its Right Wrong

Borat! is replete with what might be called "nesting occidentalisms" or "nesting anti-Americanisms": that is, it creates and plays on foreign and domestic hierarchies of Americans, good, bad, and ugly. Chris Jones hits on the triteness and tawdriness of Baron Cohen's itinerary in the film as follows:

...Borat starts his American trek in New York, land of the cold and the distant, where the only communication is by epithet. Then he heads to the South, land of the obsequiously and idiotically polite, where the local gothics haven't changed their outlook since the days of Scarlett O'Hara. He takes a turn for Texas--where outsize nuts in cowboy hats chew their cuds on every corner. And after a brief sojourn in the ghetto--where every road is named "Martin Luther King Blvd."--he ends up in Southern California, where surgically enhanced breasts heave in every swimsuit.

In other words, Baron Cohen took the road so-frequently-travelled straight through the European's amusement park of American stereotypes (and some would have us believe only Americans view the world as an postponement of Disneyland!) "Othering," it turns out, does not rejoinder the class struggle or political correctness.

Baron Cohen indubitably takes--or at least wishes to portray--himself seriously. It should thus come to no one's surprise that those Americans who come off best in the film are a religiously-observant elderly Jewish integrate who run a bed-and-breakfast and an African-American callgirl (variously claimed on the Internet to be an actress):

I think part of the movie shows the absurdity of holding any form of racial prejudice, either it's hatred of African-Americans or of Jews...Borat essentially works as a tool. By himself being anti-Semitic, he lets population lower their guard and expose their own prejudice, either it's anti-Semitism or an acceptance of anti-Semitism....I remember, when I was in university I studied history, and there was this one major historian of the Third Reich, Ian Kershaw. And his quote was, "The path to Auschwitz was paved with indifference." I know it's not very funny being a comedian talking about the Holocaust, but I think it's an piquant idea that not everyone in Germany had to be a raving anti-Semite. They just had to be apathetic.

But is that indubitably what we are talking about with the ugly Americans Baron Cohen meets in Borat!? For one thing, Chris Jones poses a good question: did Baron Cohen indubitably have to "cross the pond" to find such disturbing stereotypes?

Because Cohen is now reportedly the top paid comic in Britain--and because he styles himself as a radical--here's the movie he should now make. Let's see his Borat make some Cultural Learnings of his own smug world. It wouldn't be hard for him to chat up a racist in a London pub. He could go to any British soccer game and find a cacophony of anti-gay slurs. Get an Irishman on the road chattering about Eastern European immigrants and person will put a foot in it. Borat could spend time with French gothics from the Dordogne. He could teach us about the way Europe has integrated (or not) its Muslim citizens. Don't they have hookers in Hamburg? Let's see if they're welcome at your better class of German party.

As Andrew Mueller notes about the movie: "What astonishes about every American he encounters is not their naivete, but their politeness, hospitality, and the fabulous degree to which Borat has to inflame situations to provoke reaction. Had he attempted these antics in many other countries--bringing a hooker to dinner, desecrating the national anthem in front of a rodeo audience--he'd have conducted the publicity campaign in traction."

I would argue that Baron Cohen to some extent misinterprets the reactions of those he "exposes." Is what he sees with most of the Americans he captures on tape the same as what he claims of the "upper-class Englishmen...so keen to appear gentle for the camera"? I don't think so. The reserve, the failure to act, the consensual behavior of the Americans Baron Cohen meets, I would argue, is born of a desire not to offend the guest, no matter how odd he is, not to speak or ask questions lest one show one's ignorance. After all, the biggest faux pas one can make in today's globalized day and age, we are told, is to mock or express ignorance of our interlocutor's culture. Don't be judgmental, just play along, go along to get along...

This is American socio-cultural laissez-faire -also known as American self-centeredness--at its best and worst, a world where personel privacy can reach absurd proportions, either it be not asking a neighbor about his wage or the worth of her house, or not interfering with the neighbor next door even though you might ask the Noises you hear at night as indicating corporal or reasoning abuse. Indeed, the very American counter to Borat! can be seen in the final episode of the long-running comedy series Seinfeld, where the four main characters are hauled into court for failing to fulfill a newly-passed "Good Samaritan" law and helping a man in distress, whom they instead made fun of because of his weight--an homage, intended or not, to American self-centeredness.

Is it safe?...Is it safe?

"Is it safe?...Is it safe?" is no longer just something you hear at the dentist anymore. It is the concept that crosses people's minds before, while, or after they laugh in our post-modern world. maybe the episode here, however, is to not to take all this overly-seriously.

Americans should indubitably be thankful for such a movie: it holds a mirror up and tells us how some in the rest of the world view us. As has often been said, in the past many who disliked the United States had a compartmentalized view that separated U.S. Foreign policy from the American people; increasingly surveys of foreign collective concept advise that foreigners are no longer drawing this dissimilarity (although it may indubitably be that the perceptions of the previous are negatively affecting the latter). Like it or not, Baron Cohen has tapped in effectively to foreign perceptions of the United States and he found enough Americans to play the ugly stereotypes he anticipated of them brilliantly.

On the other hand, yes, Virginia, it is safe to laugh at Borat. Andrew Mueller explains why:

The speculate that Borat is such a liberating hoot is Baron-Cohen's understanding that nothing is funnier than what we're not supposed to laugh at--and, in the early 21st century, the pressure upon us not to laugh at the backwardness and stupidity of foreigners has been considerable. We are anticipated to take seriously population who want to execute cartoonists for drawing, and stone women for having sex--neither of which, as ideas, are dafter than the Kazakh custom, described by Borat, of compelling gay population to wear blue hats.

Nor should we cry too much for Kazakhstan (Moscow indubitably doesn't). As one poster on a website debating either Borat is good or bad publicity for Kazakhstan stated: "Without Borat, Kazakhstan is just an additional one obscure Central Asian republic." an additional one pointed out, Borat is portrayed as "naïve, but he is not cruel or bad." Others suggest, the Kazakhs could pull off a real coup if they were now to use the Borat character in a film to market "the real Kazakhstan." Professor Sean Roberts notes that, according to GoogleTrends, Borat more than doubled Kazakhstan's usual google hits while the lead up and height of the Borat film's Pr campaign.

All that remains then is the final plot gismo for Baron Cohen to kill off Borat, so that nobody is upset anymore. A modest proposal: How about a "Dallas"-like plot twister with "Who shot Borat?" Was it the Americans, the Kazakhs, the villagers of Glod?... Why it was the Baron Cohen himself

Ata vs Sata

Hard Drives: Ata versus Sata

The operation of computer systems has been steadily expanding as faster processors, memory, and video cards are continuously being developed. The one key component that is often neglected when finding at enhancing the operation of a computer principles is the hard drive. Hard drive manufacturers have been constantly evolving the basic hard drive used in modern computer systems for the last 25 years, and the last few years have seen some intriguing developments from faster spindle speeds, larger caches, great reliability, and increased data transmission speeds.

Western Hard Drive

The drive type used most in consumer grade computers is the hearty Ata type drive (commonly called an Ide drive). The Ata accepted dates back to 1986 and is based on a 16-bit parallel interface has undergone many evolutions since its introduction to growth the speed and size of the drives that it can support. The newest accepted is Ata-7 (first introduced in 2001 by the T13 Technical Committee (the group responsible for the Ata standard)) which supports data transfer rates up to 133Mb/sec. This is imaginable to be the last modernize for the parallel Ata standard.

Ata vs Sata

As long ago as 2000 it was seen that the parallel Ata accepted was maxing out its limitations as to what it could handle. With data rates hitting the 133Mb/sec mark on a parallel cable, you are intriguing all sorts of problems because of signal timing, Emi (electromagnetic interference) and other data integrity issues; thus business leaders got together and came up with a new accepted known as Serial Ata (Sata). Sata has only been nearby a few years, but is destined to come to be "the standard" due to any benefits to be addressed in this Tech Tip.

The two technologies that we will be finding at are:
Ata (Advanced Technology Attachment) - a 16-bit parallel interface used for controlling computer drives. Introduced in 1986, it has undergone many evolutions in the last 18+ years, with the newest version being called Ata-7. Wherever an item is referred to as being an Ata device, it is ordinarily a Parallel Ata device. Ata devices are also ordinarily called Ide, Eide, Ultra-Ata, Ultra-Dma, Atapi, Pata, etc. (each of these acronyms verily do refer to very specific items, but are ordinarily interchanged)
Sata (Serial industrialized Technology Attachment) - a 1-bit serial evolution of the Parallel Ata bodily warehouse interface.

Basic Features & Connections

Sata drives are easy to distinguish from their Ata cousins by the different data and Power connections found on the back of the drives. A side-by-side comparison of the two interfaces can be seen in this Pdf from Maxtor, and the following covers many of the differences...

Standard Ata drives, such as this 200Gb Western Digital model, have somewhat bulky, two inch wide ribbon cable with 40-pin data connections and receive the 5V vital to Power them from the well-known 4-pin connection. The basic data cables for these drives have looked the same for years. A turn was made with the introduction of the Ata-5 accepted to great heighten the signal ability by production an 80 wire cable used on the 40-pin connector (these are ordinarily called 40-pin/80-wire cables). To heighten airflow within the computer principles some manufacturers resorted to verily folding over the ribbon cable and taping it into that position. Other recent bodily turn also came with the arrival of rounded cables. The operation of the rounded cables is equal to that of the flat ribbon, but many prefer the improved principles air flow afforded, ease of wire management, and cooler appearance that come with them.

Sata drives, such as this 120Gb Western Digital model, have a half inch wide, 7 "blade and beam" data connection, which results in a much thinner and easier to administrate data cable. These cables take the convenience of the Ata rounded cables to the next level by being even narrower, more flexible and capable of being longer without fear of data loss. Sata cables have a maximum distance of 1 meter (39.37 inches), which is much greater than the recommended 18 inch cable for Ata drives. The reduced footprint of Sata data connections frees up space on motherboards, potentially allowing for more convenient layouts and room for more onboard features!

A 15-pin Power relationship delivers the 250mV of vital power to Sata drives. 15-pins for a Sata expedient sounds like it would require a much larger power cable than a 4-pin Ata device, but in reality the two power connectors are just about the same height. For the time being, many Sata drives are also arrival with a heritage 4-pin power connector for convenience.

Many modern motherboards, such as this Chaintech motherboard, come with Sata drive connections onboard (many also together with the Ata connectors as well for heritage drive compatibility), and new power supplies, such as this Ultra X-Connect, ordinarily highLight a few of the vital 15-pin power connections, production it easy to use these drives on new systems. Older systems can verily be upgraded to reserve Sata drives by use of Adapters, such as this Pci slot Sata controller and this 4-pin to 15-pin Sata power Adapter.

Optical drives are also becoming more facilely available with Sata connections. Drives such as the Plextor Px-712Sa take advantage of the new interface, although the operation will not be any greater than a comparable optical drive with an Ata connection.

Performance

In expanding to being more convenient to setup and drawing less power, Sata drives have operation benefits that verily set them apart from Ata drives.

The most intriguing operation highLight of Sata is the maximum bandwidth possible. As we have noted, the evolution of Ata drives has seen the data transfer rate reach its maximum at 133 Mb/second, where the current Sata accepted provides data transfers of up to 150 Mb/second. The thorough operation growth of Sata over Ata can currently be imaginable to be up to 5% (according to Seagate), but improvements in Sata technology will verily heighten on that.

The time to come of Sata holds great things for those wanting even more speed, as drives with 300 Mb/second transfer rates (Sata Ii) will be facilely available in 2005, and by 2008 speeds of up to 600 Mb/second can be expected. Those speeds are incredible, and are hard to imagine at this point.

Another operation advantage found on Sata drives is their built-in hot-swap capabilities. Sata drives can be brought on and offline without shutting down the computer system, providing a serious advantage to those who can't afford downtime, or who want to Move drives in and out of operation quickly. The higher whole of wires in the power relationship is partially explained by this, as six of the fifteen wires are dedicated to allowing the hot-swap feature.

Price

Comparing Ata drives to Sata drives can be tricky given all of the variables, but in general it is the case that Sata drives will still cost just a bit more than a comparable Ata drive. The gap is closing rapidly though, and as Sata drives gain in popularity and availability a positive shift in prices can be expected. considering the benefits of Sata over Ata, the possible inequity of a few dollars can verily be justified when considering an upgrade. Computer Geeks currently has a small option of Sata drives, but any technical sites, such as The Tech Zone and The Tech Lounge, offer real time price guides to see how comparable drives stack up.

Final Words

The current Sata accepted provides vital benefits over Ata in terms of convenience, power consumption and, most importantly, performance. The main thing Ata has going for it right now is history, as it has been the accepted for so long that it will not likely disappear any time soon. The time to come of Sata will be even more intriguing as speed increases will help hard drive amelioration keep pace with other key principles components.

Data saving for Western Digital Hard Drives

Data rescue emergencies do happen from time to time and it's prominent to take the right steps to protect and recover your data. In most cases, you will need to see a reputable data rescue specialist who can fix your hard drive and retrieve your prominent files and information.

Western Digital is the second largest maker of computer hard drives in the world. You will often see Western Digital products identified as a Wd hard disk, Wd hard drive or Wdhdd. Western Digital hard drives are relatively uncostly and can hold large amounts of data. Wd hard drives tend to be durable, but like all hard drives, they are sensitive instruments that can be vulnerable to corporeal damage.

Western Hard Drive

All hard disk drives can be field to two main categories of damage: Logical and physical. Logical damage includes damage caused by things like computer viruses, improper formatting, file corruption and accidental deletion.

Data saving for Western Digital Hard Drives

Physical damage includes things like wear and tear, damage to the internal components of the device, heat or water damage and Power surges.

Repairing corporeal damage

In cases where your computer has sustained corporeal damage, you'll need a data rescue specialist to help recover your files and information. Repairing the corporeal components of a hard disk requires a dust free clean room environment and specialized tools. It's not something the mean person could do without specialized training and equipment.

To send your hard disk out for repair, it's best to send it in your manufacturer's original packaging. If you don't have way to that, you can use a quarterly freezer back and pack it tightly in a small box. Fill the space nearby the drive with bubble wrap. Don't use Styrofoam peanuts as they can attract static electricity.

Data rescue associates differ in the amount of time it takes to fix your drive and recover your data, but some, like Sydney Data Recovery can retrieve your files in as microscopic as 12 to 24 hours!

The most common signs of corporeal damage to a hard drive are:

A clicking sound coming from the drive. The computer may reboot on its own or shuts off unexpectedly. The drive is not listed in Windows disk supervision or the law Bios. There is no sound when the drive is Powered up. Visible damage to the drive itself.

It's very prominent to take good corporeal care of your Western Digital hard drive. Keep your computer in a cool, dry location out of direct sunLight and make sure that you have surge protection. Keep your computer in a low traffic area of your house where it is less likely to be knocked or bumped and make sure it is sitting in a flat, carport position on a desk or stand.

Repairing logical damage

If the disk drive has sustained logical damage, your drive may still be recognized by the law Bios, but you will still have problems accessing your data.

Logical problems can be much simpler and easier to fix than corporeal damage, but it still pays to get professional help, particularly if recovering your lost data is critical. There are software programs available that can help you recover lost in files in case of a logical failure, but these are not always reliable and in some cases can cause you to erase the very files you were attempting to recover.

If you do encounter a logical hard drive failure, it's prominent that you shut your computer down safely, rather than lasting to hit keys in an endeavor to fix the damage. The facts you type in may unintentionally overwrite your files, production them impossible to recover. The best selection is to shut your computer down and call a data rescue firm as soon as you can.

A data rescue specialist can diagnose your hard drive and offer the best programs and solutions to retrieve your data.

In all cases, the best defence against losing your prominent files and facts is to back up your files to an external hard drive on a quarterly basis. This ensures that you will be able to way your data from at least one source even if you do experience a hard drive failure.

The Benefits of a Network External Hard Drive

Because of the Internet, file-sharing has come to be easy, resulting in the vast popularity of videos, music, software and other downloadable materials from many separate websites. The Internet has provided a lot of advantages, but has also often resulted in computer disasters when a virus, a Trojan or spyware software has attacked a personal computer.

By utilizing a network external hard drive for backups to fetch your data and files on your personal computer you safe yourself against all of your information being corrupted and gone forever. Another speculate why you need to get an external disk drive is to lessen the clogging up of your Pc with so many files stored on it, which can at last supervene in slower performance.

Western Hard Drive

Adding more warehouse for your files not only makes your data fetch for accidental erasures (if you back it up!), but it also provides you with an extra area for more leading files to be stored centrally for easy reference and backups.

The Benefits of a Network External Hard Drive

Besides serving as an add-on warehouse device, a network drive can be used to keep copies of your leading documents, such as legal and personal documents, in a detach area to avoid being affected by a computer crash and from the dangerous eyes of potential hackers on your system.

Small movable external hard drives come in separate small sizes and capacities that will suit your definite needs. Ranging from 100 gb to 500 gb in size for drive space allocations, this smaller media warehouse devices have been a beloved selection for personal desktop computer owners and small business.

Most external hard disks are compliant with the Usb 2.0 interface as found today in most Pcs and Macs. But more recently other selection connections are available, such as Firewire, Ethernet or eSata. If these are supported then you are offered more reliable connections and higher data transfer rates compared to proper Usb.

However the new network external hard drive models have much larger capacities from a minimum of 1 Tb (terabyte) up to a maximum of 8 terabytes. This is an broad amount of warehouse space and the larger capacities are physically bigger as well, which means they are not certainly small and portable, but they are excellent as a network drive on your home WiFi principles and can be shred by your families laptops or other computers.

With an Ethernet connection, your network external hard drive can even be used in a network-attached warehouse (Nas) system, where you can share files in your home network or passage your files over the internet.

Today there are many separate kinds and models of external hard drives designed for definite purposes and uses. Economy brands with lesser warehouse capacity are ideal for back-up of leading files, and even the whole computer principles as a safety in case of a computer crash. And everybody should have one of these (and use it!) as a minimum.

Usually, this type of movable external disk is bundled with a free software back-up utility for a user kindly back up plan that can be done in an instant. Since this type of external media gismo is plug'n'play compatible you won't have to be a techie to do a quarterly back-up of your computer files. No excuse now then!

There are also several configurations in many of these movable drives, where most are using the Usb connection for Power, while in others there is a requirement for an external Ac Power source.

Other features of a network external hard drive often contain password safety and data encryption to give these much higher capacity drives more privacy protection. So anything you buy whether just a small movable or huge Nas external drive just ensure you make the most of it and don't forget to do those backups!
